The collection currently spans one month after Hurricane Harvey made landfall in Houston on August 25th, 2017 and covers the geographic areas of Dickinson, League City, and Friendswood. Future collaborations will produce a more comprehensive resource which will serve the future generations of the surrounding communities or outside users that are seeking a deeper understanding of the event. This digital collection has the capacity to be included in any larger institution that also seeks to preserve historical artifacts and experiences.
Mission Statement
The intent of the photographs and narratives in this personal collection is to illuminate how people are affected by natural disasters as well as how they respond in a time of crisis. In the midst of Hurricane Harvey, there was an impressive outpour of help and support among neighbors and strangers. On the other hand, there were also examples of people taking advantage of the chaos by looting stores and homes. Each photograph displays the physical damage caused by the storm but supporting resources and background information will also reveal the cultural effects on the local communities.
